You Don’t Have To Figure Out The ‘How’!
I used to be very into conventional self-help and motivational material, particularly that which related to goal setting. One tactic that many authors recommended was to set a big goal, which was usually planned for a few years from now, and then work backwards by setting smaller goals. So you might expect to take five years to achieve the main goal, then you’d set sub-goals for each of the years, months, weeks and days that lead up to that. All in all, this is a very neat, step-by-step kind of approach, with everything mapped out reassuringly. It is appealing in part because it gives people sense of absolute control over the course of their lives.
While this approach is popular with many, and undoubtedly works for many too, I never liked it, despite its appeal as route to my dreams. This was partly because in many cases I simply didn’t know the best path to my goal. I was trying to figure out the ‘how’ for every step of the way, but sometimes I just couldn’t know what each step should look like from where I was.
A related problem was that even if I thought I knew what I should do, I often didn’t want to do it. There might have been an accepted route for getting to my particular destination, one that many people had travelled before, but it just didn’t feel like fun to me. Much of this conventional ‘wisdom’ was based around the old ‘suffer and struggle’ mentality – the belief that the only way to achieve a certain outcome was to ‘pay your dues’ in all kinds of unpleasant ways. So I’d find myself procrastinating because I didn’t want to go through all that (I didn’t know at the time that, as Abraham says, ‘you can’t have a happy ending to an unhappy journey’!)
Another issue with this approach was simply that I didn’t really want to have my life all mapped out. I found that by living like this, some of the magic went out of life. I always knew in advance what I’d be doing each day, month, year etc, and there seemed to be little room for spontaneity, because, after all, this was the path to success, or at least the most obvious and efficient one!
I soon noticed that I was procrastinating in a big way. My final goals were as important to me as ever, but I just could not get myself to follow through on those oh-so-detailed plans I’d made to get there. I thought this procrastination was a bad thing, and would regularly beat myself up about it, but now I see it was my inner guidance leading me away from a self-imposed path that wasn’t actually the best one for me. I’d have periodic attempts to ‘get motivated’, but they never lasted long. I wondered if I’d ever get to where I wanted to be, given my apprent inability to take action.
But when I discovered Abraham some time later, I finally got it – I don’t have to live like that to be successful! I can experience the fulfilment of every goal and desire, large and small – without having to figure out ‘how’ to get there. Indeed, trying to plan all the details of the journey in advance can be counter-productive.
Here is a quote from Abraham that perfectly sums this up. This reply was given in response to a guest who said he wanted a million dollars, but didn’t want to go through the usual motions of working for it:
‘You say ‘I want a million dollars, and I know there are a lot of people that have a million dollars who got it in a way that would not be uncomfortable to me’. But when you say ‘I want a million dollars, but there is no one that I am going to inherit it from. Or there is nobody that is going to die and leave it to me’… In other words you have to stop the contradiction. When you talk about what you want and why you want it there is usually less resistance within you than when you talk about what you want and how you are going to get it, because when you pose questions that you don’t have answers for how, where, when, who… then it sets up a contradictory vibration within you that slows everything down.
[Make] statements like ‘there must be plenty of people on the planet today who have a million dollars and an excess of it. Who at one time were standing right where I am just wanting it and had no idea how it was going to come’. Feel how resistance-free that statement is? Words like faith and trust are so annoying on certain levels, but we want to explain to you the value of them, because even though you don’t know how, when or where or who – if you know what and you talk about why you want it and you have practiced the thought of it until it is starting to feel very familiar to you… What begins to happen is things that couldn’t happen to you now begin happening. Ideas that wouldn’t even have occurred to you now begin to occur to you, and rendezvous with people that you don’t have access to begin to happen, and then when your million and many more come to you, you will wonder where it always was.

It’s so true! I take this approach with all my desires now, both large and small, and it’s a fantastic way to live. New ideas and solutions do come seemingly out of nowhere, people show up to help, I find just the information I need at the perfect time – everything just falls into place, often in deliciously synchronistic ways that I’d never have dreamed of myself. But only so long as I allow it. If I start worrying about ‘how’ this could possibly work, I get in my own way, and the flow of inspiration and help slows or stops, because I’m now out of alignment. I don’t need to see the entire road ahead – just the next step or two. And with each step forward, more is revealed.
And the best thing is, it’s such fun to live this way! I love knowing that everything is lining up, that the details reveal themselves at the perfect time, and that I have this fantastic ‘ universal manager’ working on my behalf, so I no longer have to plan and control every little detail myself. It’s that wonderful feeling of being carried along downstream, to use Abraham’s analogy, and knowing that so long as I remain focused on my desire, and am tuned into my emotional guidance system, I’m going in the right direction, and the manifestation is inevitable. It’s goodbye to stress, and hello to easy, effortless success!
It can be a little challenging for those who – like me – are used to feeling the need to map out every little thing, to feel comfortable with letting go of some of that. And of course, if it feels like fun to make detailed plans, that’s inspired action, and you should keep doing it. But if trying to figure it all out in advance feels like a chore rather than a joy, take the plunge and let it go. Because your Inner Being will show you the perfect next move every step of the way – guaranteed! You’re in no way giving up control of your experience – just delegating some of the planning to that broader part of yourself which is only to happy to assist with making your life experience much a easier and more joyful one than you’d probably create for yourself from your purely physical perspective!
