Who Is Abraham?

Ask & It Is Given - Abraham-Hicks

I’m something of an Abraham-Hicks fan, and this article is basically an introduction to them.

Abraham – not a singular being

Abraham is the name chosen by a group of highly evolved non-physical consciousnesses who speak through Esther Hicks, who acts as a channel (although they themselves do not use the word ‘channelling’). They have mentioned that there are over 100 of them, with individual consciousnesses joining and leaving at the group at different times. Many of them have lived physical lives, whereas others have not, instead existing purely in the non-physical state. They also identify themselves with the Inner Being, or what others have termed the ‘higher self’ – that broader, more knowing aspect of our consciousness that remains non-physical and is available to guide us in our physical lives. Abraham entities are drawn together by their mutual intention to teach and uplift; they are, they say a “family of teachers”, as are many of the people who are drawn to their materials.

How did it all begin?

According to Jerry Hicks, he has always had a strong desire to know about the big questions – the meaning of life, etc. Esther Hicks, on the other hand, was living ‘happily ever after’ with no real worries or questions about anything when they met. In this state, she was open to and allowing of new ideas, having no strong opinions of her own. It was this combination of Jerry’s powerful asking, and Esther’s allowing that drew Abraham to them in 1985.

Just prior to this they had visited a channeller through whom they spoke with an entity named Theo, who answered many of Jerry’s numerous questions, and who told Esther that the name of her own spiritual guide would soon be revealed to her directly. Esther had been reluctant to be involved with any of this at first, coming as she did from a conservative background where ‘occult‘ matters were frowned upon. But she was by that point happy to take Theo’s advice to her and Jerry to meditate together, and experienced a total quieting of her mind and numbing of her body in the first session. Several months later, she made her first conscious contact with Abraham, when they began to spell out words in the air with her nose. Written and then spoken communication followed later.

Taking it further…

Despite Esther’s initial reluctance to go public with Abraham, the Hicks began to produce printed material and then to give seminars. Since then the Abraham phenomenon has continued to grow with fantastic success, to the point that today they spend their lives travelling the US to do interactive Abraham seminars (as well as exotic cruises), and offer hundreds of products, including CDs, tapes, books, DVDs and more. Esther and Abraham also made an appearance in the first version of ‘The Secret’ movie, which introduced many new people to their work, although they aren’t in the current version. Their own subsequent DVD ‘Introducing Abraham – The Secret Behind has proven very popular also.

What can this material do for me?

Everything, or nothing, depending on your own vibrational match to it! For those that are open to this work, the Abraham material offers a path to a life that is totally joyous, fulfilled abundant, and successful in every possible way. They give a very clear explanation of our non-physical origins, our physical natures and general intentions, and a huge array of techniques for moving beyond the limitations that most of us have picked up on our physical journeys into the creation of lives that are perfectly in harmony with our strongest desires and joyous in every way. If you desire self-empowerment without dogma, lack or limitation of any kind, Abraham could be perfect for you!

What is the essence of their teachings?

Basically, they promote an extreme and joyous form of individual self-empowerment, noting that life is supposed to be fun, and that we each have the capacity to create the life of our dreams – quickly and easily, without struggle and suffering. To many who have grown up with the usual concepts of lack and limitation characteristic of our society, this might all sound a bit too good to be true – but it is true! And the techniques they give for manipulating our vibration and fully aligning with our desires work – it just takes a little practice (ok, sometimes a lot of practice!), and a determination that “nothing is so important than that I feel good”.

Why should I listen to them?

Because a consistent application of their teachings can lead you to the life you really want perfect life – is that reason enough? Consider this – most people in western society have grown up in cultures that promote individual freedom (to varying degrees) in principle, but don’t quite measure up in practice. Abraham tells the truth – that we are all totally free to live as we choose, regardless of what anyone else believes, or what is happening around us. By changing our thoughts and feelings, we change our vibrational alignment, and attract different experiences. To experience a life that is perfect for us (and everyone’s idea of a perfect life will vary; Abraham has no interest in telling people what they should want – only in how to get there) we must learn to control our vibration – it really is that simple.

Simple, but not always easy at first, and to that end they provide a huge array of processes designed to help people in all emotional states to take control of their vibration and experience. So, if you’re interested in taking total control of your manifestations and creating a life that is ideal for you in every way – with NO compromises – this might be the way to go.

Where do I start?

With hundreds of CDs, tapes and other products, not to mention the very large and generous amount of free reading material on their website, it might be a little confusing to know where to start if you’re new to Abraham! I recommend visiting their website and listening to the free introductory recordings, which give a great overview of Abraham’s philosophy. You might also want to watch the free videos or reading through some of the free transcripts of their sessions in the journals. There’s also other free stuff on their site if you browse around.

As you can see, there’s a lot of free material available, so you can see if Abraham appeals to you or not without having to spend a penny – can’t argue with that!

If you do decide to get one of their books, I suggest Ask and it is Given. I’ve enjoyed all their books, but think this one is especially useful for anyone who’s not familiar with their work. It’s available in audio book for too, if you’d rather listen than read.
